The chapter begins with counsel about women: do not be jealous of your wife, avoid harlots and singing women, do not gaze on a maid or sit drinking with another man's wife, for desire is kindled like a fire. Shorter maxims follow. 'Forsake not an old friend': a new friend is like new wine, better once it has aged. Do not envy the glory of a sinner, whose end you do not know. Keep far from the man who has power to kill, as one walking on the battlements of the city. Let your talk be with the wise and your glory in the fear of the Lord.
