'As a nail sticketh fast between the joinings of the stones; so doth sin stick close between buying and selling.' A man is tried by his reasoning, as pots by the furnace and a tree by its fruit: praise no one before you hear him speak. Truth returns to those who practise it, as birds resort to their like. Much of the chapter concerns betrayed secrets: a wound can be bound up and an insult forgiven, but whoever discloses a friend's secrets has lost him like a bird let go from the hand. The flatterer twists your words later, and 'whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein.'
