Demetrius sends Bacchides and Alcimus back with the chief strength of his host. At Eleasa most of Judas' three thousand men slip away, leaving eight hundred. Judas will not flee: 'if our time be come, let us die manfully for our brethren'. He breaks the right wing, then falls, and is buried at Modin. Amid famine and persecution his friends choose Jonathan. The sons of Jambri kill his brother John, and Jonathan avenges him at their wedding; trapped by the Jordan, his men swim across. Alcimus dies of a palsy while pulling down the inner court wall. Bacchides fails before Bethbasi, makes peace, and Jonathan governs from Machmas.
