About Modin

Modin was the home town of the priest Mattathias and his sons, the Maccabees. There Mattathias refused the order of Antiochus Epiphanes to sacrifice to idols, launching the revolt. The family tomb was at Modin: Mattathias, Judas and Jonathan were buried there, and Simon raised over it a monument with seven pyramids. The site lies in the foothills between Jerusalem and the coast, near the modern city of Modiin; its exact location is uncertain.

Biblical Significance of Modin

Modin is the cradle of the Maccabean revolt. There the priest Mattathias refused the king's order to sacrifice to idols and called all who were zealous for the law to follow him. The town remained the family's home and burial place: Mattathias, Judas and Jonathan were laid in the tomb of their fathers, and Simon raised over it a monument with seven pyramids that the author says still stood in his day. The exact site is uncertain; it is usually placed near the modern city of Modiin, between Jerusalem and the coastal plain.
