'Let us now praise famous men, and our fathers that begat us.' The Praise of the Fathers begins with all who ruled, counselled, prophesied or composed music; some left a name, others are forgotten, yet the righteous live on in their seed. Then come the first names: Enoch, who pleased the Lord and was translated; Noah, found perfect and left as a remnant when the flood came; Abraham, father of many peoples, faithful when proved, to whom God swore to bless the nations in his seed; and Isaac and Jacob, on whose head the blessing rested, divided among the twelve tribes.
