Duties toward the poor open the chapter: do not defraud the needy or turn your face from the afflicted, for if they curse you in bitterness, their Maker will hear. 'Be as a father unto the fatherless', and you will be as a son of the most High. Wisdom then appears with her children: she tests those who seek her by crooked ways and hard discipline until she can trust them, then reveals her secrets. The chapter ends with counsel on the shame that brings sin and the shame that is grace, on striving for truth unto death, and on not being 'as a lion in thy house'.
