One just child is better than a thousand ungodly ones. The teacher recalls God's judgments: the old giants, the place where Lot sojourned, the six hundred thousand footmen hardened in their hearts, and Pharaoh, whom the Lord hardened. Mercy and wrath both belong to God, and every man will be judged by his works. Do not say 'I will hide myself from the Lord' among so many creatures: heaven, the deep and the mountains shake when he visits. The chapter then turns to creation, where God ordered his works from the beginning so that none hinders another, and filled the earth with living things.
