The chapter teaches discernment in doing good: 'know to whom thou doest it.' Help the godly and the lowly, but hold back your bread from the ungodly, who would use it to overmaster you. A friend cannot be known in prosperity, nor an enemy hidden in adversity. Never trust an enemy: even when he goes crouching, his wickedness returns like rust on iron. Do not seat him at your right hand, lest he seek your place. Who pities a charmer bitten by a serpent? The enemy speaks sweetly and weeps, but in your trouble he is there first, shaking his head and clapping his hands.
