Holofernes reassures her: he has never hurt anyone willing to serve Nabuchodonosor. Judith confirms Achior's words: her people cannot be defeated unless they sin. But now, she says, they are starving and have decided to eat their cattle and the firstfruits and tithes reserved for the priests in Jerusalem, and once they do so they will be given into his hands. She will go out each night to pray and tell him when they have sinned; then she will lead him through Judea to Jerusalem, where they will be 'as sheep that have no shepherd'. Charmed, Holofernes promises that her God will be his God.
