Judith takes off her sackcloth and widow's garments, bathes, anoints herself, braids her hair and puts on the jewels she wore in her husband's lifetime. Her maid carries their food. Ozias and the elders, astonished at her beauty, bless her at the gate. Stopped by the first Assyrian watch, she says she is a Hebrew fleeing her people and has come to show Holofernes a way to take the hill country without losing a man. A hundred men escort her, and she bows low before Holofernes as he comes out with silver lamps.
