With all his brothers dead, Simon rallies the frightened people and is acclaimed leader. Tryphon demands a hundred talents and two of Jonathan's sons as ransom; Simon sends them though he sees the deceit, lest he be blamed for his brother's death. Tryphon keeps Jonathan, is held back by a great snow, and kills him near Bascama. Simon buries him at Modin and raises a monument with seven pyramids. Demetrius grants immunity, and in the 170th year 'the yoke of the heathen was taken away from Israel'. Simon takes Gaza, starves out the tower, enters it with palm branches and songs, and sets his son John over the army.

The wilderness refers to the desert regions of Sinai and Judea. Israel wandered here for 40 years after the Exodus. John the Baptist preached in the wilderness of Judea, and Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness for 40 days. It represents testing, preparation, and encounter with God.
