Now the speaker, a king, talks about himself: he was born like everyone, drew in the common air and cried at birth, for no king had any other beginning. So he prayed, and the spirit of wisdom came to him; he preferred her to sceptres, gold, health and beauty, and with her all good things came. God gave him knowledge of the elements, the seasons, the stars, the animals and the virtues of roots. Then follows a portrait of wisdom and her many-sided spirit: she is 'the breath of the power of God', 'the brightness of the everlasting light', and makes holy souls friends of God and prophets.
