Wisdom prospers Israel's march through the wilderness 'in the hand of the holy prophet', and a comparison begins that runs to the end of the book: by what things their enemies were punished, by the same Israel was helped. The river fouled with blood, in reproof of the decree that slew the infants, is set against water from the flinty rock. Because the Egyptians worshipped serpents and vile beasts, beasts were sent against them. God could have sent bears, lions or fire-breathing monsters, but 'thou hast ordered all things in measure and number and weight'. He has mercy upon all and abhors nothing he has made, 'thou lover of souls'.
