Sirach 6 - Summary

Summary

Read Sirach Chapter 6 Summary

Friendship fills the first half of the chapter. Sweet language multiplies friends, but keep 'one counsellor of a thousand' and prove a friend before trusting him: some vanish in the day of affliction. Against them stands the faithful friend, 'a strong defence', a treasure and 'the medicine of life', found by those who fear the Lord. The second half invites the reader to wisdom: come to her as one who ploughs and sows, put your feet into her fetters and your neck into her chain, and her bonds will become a robe of glory. Seek out the wise and wear the steps of his door.
