Keeping the law is offering enough: departing from wickedness pleases the Lord, and alms are a sacrifice of praise. Yet do not appear before him empty-handed, but give with a cheerful countenance, for the Lord repays seven times as much. He cannot be bribed and has no respect of persons; he hears the oppressed, the fatherless and the widow whose tears run down her cheeks. 'The prayer of the humble pierceth the clouds' and does not rest until the most High judges. The Lord will break the sceptre of the unrighteous, and his mercy comes like rain clouds in a time of drought.
