The chapter begins with the labourer given to drink and the men undone by wine and harlots. A lesson on speech follows: whoever is hasty to believe is lightminded. 'If thou hast heard a word, let it die with thee'; it will not burst you, though a fool labours with it like a woman in childbirth. Before believing a tale, admonish your friend: perhaps he did not do it, or did not say it. True wisdom is the fear of the Lord and the doing of the law, not the subtlety of sinners. The hypocrite hangs his head, but his attire, laughter and gait show what he is.
