The book opens with a hymn: 'All wisdom cometh from the Lord, and is with him for ever.' No one can number the sand of the sea or the days of eternity, yet wisdom was created before all things and poured out on all God's works, above all on those who love him. The fear of the Lord fills the chapter: it is glory and gladness, 'the beginning of wisdom', its fulness, crown and root, and it drives away sin. The teacher urges patience instead of fury, keeping the commandments to gain wisdom, and coming to God without a double heart.
