In the eighteenth year Nabuchodonosor resolves in council to avenge himself on all the earth and calls Holofernes, the chief captain of his army. He orders him to march west, to demand earth and water, to keep those who yield for the day of punishment and to spare none who resist. Holofernes musters a hundred and twenty thousand footmen and twelve thousand horsemen, followed by a crowd 'like locusts'. He destroys Phud and Lud, crosses the Euphrates, ravages Mesopotamia, Cilicia and Madian and burns the fields of Damascus at harvest, until Sidon, Tyrus, Azotus and Ascalon tremble.

The wilderness refers to the desert regions of Sinai and Judea. Israel wandered here for 40 years after the Exodus. John the Baptist preached in the wilderness of Judea, and Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness for 40 days. It represents testing, preparation, and encounter with God.

Arabia was the large peninsula east of the Red Sea. Paul went to Arabia after his conversion, possibly for a time of reflection and preparation. Mount Sinai is said to be in Arabia. The Queen of Sheba came from Arabia to hear Solomon's wisdom.

Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and plays a significant role in biblical history. It was on the road to Damascus that Saul of Tarsus had his dramatic encounter with the risen Christ and was converted, becoming the apostle Paul. The prophet Elijah was told to anoint Hazael as king of Syria in Damascus. The city is mentioned throughout both the Old and New Testaments.

Sidon was an ancient Phoenician port city, often mentioned with its sister city Tyre. Queen Jezebel was a Sidonian princess.
