Tishbe was a town in Gilead, east of the Jordan River, and the hometown of the prophet Elijah. The designation "Elijah the Tishbite" identified him throughout his ministry. From this remote, rugged location in the highlands of Gilead, God raised up one of the greatest prophets in Israel's history. Elijah's hardy Gileadite background may have shaped his bold, uncompromising character that enabled him to stand fearlessly against King Ahab and the prophets of Baal.
